Project 2 - Design Process

I started up with a grid form of 9 of the cityscape to express a crampted metropolitan sense.
The figures' activities will be in the middle of the grid to form a focal point drawing attention from the public to display their activities. Gaps between the 9 boxes can be defining spaces as well.

The 3 dimensional relationship and liveliness of the grid can be manipulated by the rhythm of the heights of the "boxes".

Secondly, a busy stacks of different forms are being explored through sketches.

__________________________________________________________________
The first concept was discarded due to the limitation of development in conveying the detailed "seperation" of spaces (figure) since it is a square form.
And then i turned to sketch for an actual shape for the space with a sensation of rectangular geometry.

Plan view -
A 2 rectangular overlapped form and connection is being achieved.
Random wrapping of geometric shapes are added as to describe the broader scene of the space.

The "crosses" are the position of the figures.

Now I have a first outline, this is a revision of qualities of the scheme:
Strength:
- "Difference in shape of space" meaning different figures, different gender (the man and woman), different activities (reading newspaper/playing piano)
- Symmetry
- Geometrical quality

Weakness:
- Surface area for window opening is too small
- Limited spaces for development on third dimension

Acquiring more inspiration: review of the source

The door on the painting's composition which visually seperates the two have drew my attention into an imagination of the third space:
- Is that the exit?
- Is that another room?
- What would the two people do on the third space?
- Would they enjoy being in the third space due to their relationship status?

Development of the third space:
The door as a circulation element can be translated to a vertical extension of the 2 spaces. i.e. a stair. In consideration of providing seperation, minimizing the visual communcation path and the circulation element to the third space, the ovelapped rectagle has accomodate the idea.

Stairs

The symmetry of the shape of the space has continued on the third dimension for the placement of stairs.
Idea of the crossing of the 2 stairs from different entrace from the 2 spaces has several strengths in terms of conveying the concept:
- Symmetry
- Openings entering the stairs is as well a resolution for the "limited visual communication"
- "Crossing" of circulation but figures doesn't meet can be a miniature of the metropolitan scene in New York of how people come across each other
- "Crossing" of stairs is a powerful experience that we can feel usually on shopping mall escalators.
