Project 2 - The narrative

Painting-

"Room in New York" by Edward Hopper

Interpretation:
Edward Hopper's hint on the painting in describing the urban scene is from the eyelevel/viewpoint of the same height from the apartment unit. Railway bridges are across everywhere between urban blocks and privacies of dwellers are lost.

Through the window, the two figures in the interior of the domestic set space gives the hint that they might be a couple. While they were having a very different activities - reading newspaper, playing with keys on the piano. Seperation of the figures are further expressed on the middle door defining the symmetrical line of the composition dividing the two. Such seperation of people, is common in a metropolitan life whose face stresses and challenges everyday on a high density living space.

My narrative: Creating a space for a couple which meeting can take place without intersecting each other

The Design:
The site of the interpreted space will be set on an urban scene with tight spaces. Materials can be cold and brutal.
Aims to fulfill on the design:-
- Urban/Metropolitan scene
- Cramped urban spaces
- Creating the public circulation
- Train bridges across blocks as "observation deck"
- Interior lights illuminates at night
- Figures' activities "Display" to the public
- Depressed mood of figures
- A whole space is shared but somehow seperated
- Seperated spaces but somehow allowing communication
